Gregoria Smith, Founder of IdentityWork

Gregoria, founder of IdentityWork, LLC, is a Human Systems Dynamics practitioner with a background in health education, community psychology, health care quality, and human organizational systems. Gregoria Smith is a scholar/practitioner, a former professor at the University of Guam (UOG) and Chair of the Commission on Status of Women. Following her passion for peacemaking, she founded the International Women’s Club of Guam and was a presidential appointee to the USA Continuing Committee of the International Women’s Year Conference. Her current goal is to help improve the adaptive capacity of groups or individuals to cope with internal & external challenges in a complex world. She is an associate of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute. As a university professor, Gregoria taught Health and Wellness, Dance, and education courses, conducted research on Coping with Illness (ALS), Unity Among Pacificans, and Movement as Communicative Systems. As director of Dance Theatre Guam, she choreographed dance dramas for the South Pacific Festival of Arts held in Papua New Guinea, Australia & New Zealand. An advocate for human rights, she also gave papers on women’s health in Manila, Kuala Lumpur and was a charter member of the Nuclear-Free Pacific movement. After UOG, she managed Quality Improvement at the Guam Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse. In 1998, she moved to Houston where she tracked and trended quality performance for Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield, working with external Consultants in getting accreditation after merger & acquisition. In June, 2018, Gregoria presented a paper on “Communicating Identity” in Berlin for the ATLAS Ti, 2018 Conference for Qualitative Research. Education: She holds an MA in Behavioral Sciences, MA in Community Psychology (New York University) and a PhD in Human & Organizational Systems (Fielding). Using principles of self-organizing and appreciative inquiry, she consults to help improve the adaptive capacity of groups or individuals to cope with internal & external challenges. Gregoria also served as a Stephen Minister for 18 years in Houston. She is a member of the Raleigh Midtown Rotary Club, the AAUW (VP for Program Development), and a parishioner at the St Michael’s Episcopal Church of Raleigh. She is currently in the 3rd year of a 4-year course on Education for Ministry administered by the Sewanee Seminary. Gregoria believes in life-long learning/ teaching, in blended methods of   education, and “Service above self,” a Rotary International motto.
